MODERN MARVELS - PAINT

Image
The Laas Geel cave paintings What is Paint? What are its component parts? What are its functions?          Paint is, as stated in the Modern Marvels video, a "pigmented liquid that dries to form a solid protective film". It is a liquid that dries into a solid and is very easy to apply, but much harder to remove. Paint's component parts, or what it is made up of, are a binder, like resin, a pigment, and a sort of solvent which helps the paint flow nicely in liquid form. From the article "The Colorful History of Paint", I found that pigments used to be mixed into all kinds of things such as "water, saliva, urine, or animal fats". There are many different functions that paint can serve. First and foremost, paint can provide a protective film to any product/thing that needs protection. Some examples of this would be the industrial coatings that are painted on cars to keep them nice and shiny and protected for about 10 years, the paints that have metal in t...

The Creation of Adam (Sistine Chapel) by Michelangelo Who was Michelangelo?            Michelangelo was born in 1475 in a town called Caprese, which is a "republic of Florence". He was a "sculptor, painter, architect, and poet" who made a large impact on the world, especially during the Renaissance. Michelangelo, like Leonardo da Vinci, was a "Renaissance man" and is still known today as one of the greatest sculptors in the world. Although sculpting was his passion, and many of his most well known works were sculptures ( David ), he was also a very skilled painter. As many people know, Michelangelo painted the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel . This is one of his better known works and it was a monumental painting that was actually a series of frescoes. Michelangelo also received a lot of fame and fortune during his lifetime and was able to "support his family" with the money he made from the many commissions he had been asked of. Although it is n...

Vitruvian Man by Leonardo da Vinci https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vitruvian_Man Who was Leonardo da Vinci?          Leonardo da Vinci was an artist, scientist, and inventor that lived during the Renaissance and made some of his most well known works during the Renaissance. He is known as a typical "Renaissance man" and was known for his ambition, curiosity, and amazing range of skills. He was born near the town Vinci, which is not far from Florence, Italy, in the year 1452. Other than the fact that his parents were not actually married when he was born, which was unheard of in those times, Leonardo lived a "traditional childhood". At a very young age, he became the apprentice to the well known sculptor of the time "Andrea del Verrocchio" and started to explore paint as a substance and the many things it has to offer. He was an avid nature enthusiast and did a lot of his own studies on nature, the human body, and human tools. His style, especially when it c...

RENAISSANCE

The School of Athens by Raphael What was the Renaissance? (Do some research)          The Renaissance was a time of "rebirth" after the medieval and middle ages, which were also known as the "dark ages". It was a pivotal movement that began in Florence, Italy and spread throughout Europe as years went on, and had a focus on elevating literature, the arts, math, and science, as well as the economy. After many years of struggle, considering wars and the infamous "Black Death", trade was finally beginning to pick up, which made many people in Italy come into money. For example, the Medici were becoming extremely wealthy after a time that was filled with financial struggles and they, and other families, wanted their wealth and power to be displayed. So, families like these "funded the arts and architecture of the Renaissance" to encourage the "Renaissance man" ("somebody who knows little about a lot of different things") to crea...

INTRODUCTION

Who are you academically?  (List 3 facts) I am a secondary art education major who loves to create art in many mediums (mixed media, ceramics, wood working, metalsmithing, painting, drawing... I do it all!), and I also love to share my love for art with those around me. My studies have always been important to me and I strive to do my absolute best in every course that I take. Lastly, I am a perfectionist, so I can be very hard on myself when it comes to my academics.  What is your major? Why?  My major is secondary art education, and I chose this major because I realized after a few years of being an interior design major at Iowa State University that teaching was my passion. I have always loved working with kids, which I have had the pleasure of doing as a swim instructor since 2016, so I can only imagine how much I will love teaching art because it fuses my two favorite things together! Why did you sign up for this course?    I signed up for this cours...
